Colentum Murter International Archeological Camp.
The international archaeological camp “Colentum” operates in the area of the prehistoric hillfort and ancient settlement which is identified with the Colentum from the works of ancient writers. The first camp was held in 2012 and the organizing team of the camp is the Argonaut Association, the Museum of the City of Šibenik, the University of Zadar and the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb. Designed as a blend of research, lectures and creative workshops, it brings together sound names in the fields of archaeology, submarine archaeology, professors and students from local and international universities. In addition to fieldwork, carried out partly on land and partly covering maritime research, the camp also monitors lectures on reference topics, conducts various exercises, rehabilitation of the Colentum archaeological site, visits to nearby archaeological sites, etc. The academic value of the camp is estimated at 3 ECTS credits.
Four international archaeological camps have been held so far that have produced remarkable results. One of the significant results of the research is the knowledge that Colentum was more than a maritime villa as it was supposed to be – Colentum was a large object used from antiquity (1st century) until the 5th or 6th century, and is even possible and in the Middle Ages, and stretched over an area of at least 25 meters. Besides, numerous remains of mosaics, plugs and various fragments of amphorae have been found, fragments of fine and coarse pottery, lamps and tegulas, etc., and submarine investigations have found the remains of an ancient pier, presumably, extending from the punta under Gradina to the present-day Marina Hramina.
With the professional support of the organizers and the financial support of the Municipality of Murter Kornati, the Tourist Board of the Municipality of Murter-Kornati, the Tourist Board of the Šibenik-Knin County, the County of Šibenik-Knin and the Ministry of Culture, it is expected that future archaeological camps will receive equally valuable results and discover new secrets of the Colentum but also contribute to the development of both educational and cultural tourism.
